Frequently Asked Questions about Working Styles:
- 1. What is 'Working Style'?
It can be defined as the way people in the work force absorb and retain new and difficult information, think or concentrate, do their daily work and solve problems. Everyone has a unique style in which they prefer to work and if a person's working style is matched with their work requirements, job satisfaction increases and their work performance improves.
- 2. Why do I need to know my working style?
The more you know about yourself and what makes you tick, the better you will function in your work environment and the less stress you will experience. A knowledge of working styles reduces mismatches in the work place because employees who know how they function best, reduce down time and increase their productivity, their communication and their understanding of other people's working styles.
- 3. Can I change my working style if I want to?
Yes, you can change certain aspects of your overall style, particularly the elements in the Social area and your Attitudes because they are conditioned or learned, not biologically or genetically determined. They are usually influenced by your conditioning, your past experiences and your professional environment.
That's why it's possible to change your preferences in the Social elements of your profile (like with whom you work best and how you react to Authority) as well as in the Attitude area - although it will not always be easy to change attitudes either with will power or by changing your beliefs and/or circumstances.
Biological style elements are usually hard to change because they remain mostly stable over a life time. What you can do is to increase you flexibilities in certain desired areas, but it is necessary to realise that under pressure or stress people usually go back to their basic style features, and learned flexibilities disappear.
- 4. Can the WSA improve our employees' performance?
Yes, our experience with the WSA in many different countries and different cultures has shown that employees achieve performance improvement on many levels because they are more aware of their strengths and weaknesses, what distracts them and how they can maximise their potential. Only when people really know their style features ( preferences and non-preferences), they can increase their flexibility and in that way counteract their weaknesses.
- 5. As a trainer, how can I use this concept in my training sessions?
Knowledge about the learning/working style of participants helps a trainer to:
- orchestrate training sessions in such a way that individual learning needs can be accommodated, avoiding a mismatch between trainer and trainee;
- understand biological learning needs of trainees;
- organise group/team work based on style preferences of participants
- set up the training room according to the learning needs of the group; (following the results in the group profiles);
- make training sessions more effective, achieving long-term retention of training content and sustainable change practices.
- 6. Are working styles useful for managers?
Yes, particularly when it comes to staff selection or promotion. Knowing an employee's working style will also help with communication, how they need to be instructed and supervised and to which management style they will respond best.
- 7. Can I use WSA for setting up our office space?
Certainly. The results in the Physical Needs and in the Environment area of a person's WSA Profile give detailed information about their preferences, flexibilities and non-preferences. Comparing these results (individually or as a group) will give you reliable guidelines for setting up and/or re-arranging your office space to match employees' needs. Research has shown that people's performance improves when the work environment is matched to their individual needs.
- 8. Is the WSA a psychometric or intelligence test?
No, it is not. It is a self-assessment which gives insight into someone's unique style components regarding the physical space where they work and concentrate, their time-of-day preferences, their social and environmental needs at work as well as their frame of mind and their professional attitude.
- 9. Do you have WSA in-house training for corporations?
Yes, we offer our International WSA Certification Training as in-house training in New Zealand and internationally in English; our overseas WSA Distributors offer the same training in the language of their country.
- 10. Can I use/buy the WSA/TSA software without training?
Yes, you can, but we recommend you complete our International WSA Certification Training, particularly if you are a corporate trainer, human resource officer, consultant or manager because the training will give you a much deeper insight into our assessment instruments, their use in training and management combined with practical applications in the work place. People who have successfully completed our courses, are also entitled to purchase our Personal Assessment Software at Certified User Prices.
