Learning Styles can help! According to research, the gap in basic math and reading skills between black and white elementary school students has narrowed since the early 1990s, however, the difference increases again by the time students reach middle school (read more here: http://www.abcnews.go.com/Politics/story?id=8081063&page=1). Learning Styles address this issue by levelling the learning field across cultures and genders. Email yvonne@clc.co.nz for details.

4/02/2009 - The danger of applying learning styles...
... without proper training (source unknown):
A teacher was giving a lesson on the circulation of the blood. Trying to make the matter clearer, she said, 'Now, class, if I stood on my head, the blood, as you know, would run into it, and I would turn red in the face.'
'Yes,' the class said.
'Then why is it that while I am standing upright in the ordinary position the blood doesn't run into my feet?'
A little fellow shouted,
'Cause your feet ain't empty.' :-)

10/07/2008 - Young Americans are reading less for fun...
... and - not surprisingly - their test scores are dropping.
The National Endowment for the Arts on Nov. 19 released a study entitled "To Read or Not To Read: A Question of National Consequence" about the reading habits and skills of children, teenagers and adults. The results show that Americans, especially adolescents, are reading less. Expanding on the 2004 report "Reading at Risk," the study looks at all varieties of reading, including that of books, magazines and newspapers.
Compared to the rest of the world, American 15-year-olds rank 15th in average reading scores, behind such countries as Poland, Korea, France and Canada.

15/05/2008 - What makes children stay away from school
Apart from the basic differences between holistics and analytics, our own international findings and studies in the United States have clearly shown that the learning styles of underachievers and drop-outs were significantly different from those students who remained in school. According to the Dunn & Dunn Learning Styles Model, eight learning style elements statistically differentiated between highly at-risk or drop-out students in comparison with their counterparts who remained at school ("Do Mismatches Between Instruction and Style Create ‘Dropoutism’?", St. John's University, N.Y., 1989).
The eight strong needs in drop-out students are:
1. Mobility at frequent intervals;
2. A variety of instructional resources from which to learn (to match students' low auditory and low visual modalities and their strong preferences for tactile/kinesthetic learning - hands-on activities - and their strong need for variety rather than routines and patterns);
3. Learning difficult content at other times, not in early morning classes;
4. Recognition of their high motivation despite their inability to learn through conventional methods; positive feedback instead of put-downs;
5. Collegial rather than authoritarian teachers;
6. Resources which introduce new and difficult information through multi-sensory methods (kinesthetic, tactile, visual, auditory) to make learning easier and more appealing;
7. Informal seating arrangements in classrooms to respond to their inability to sit on plastic or wooden chairs for more than 10-12 minutes and their strong need for mobility;
8. Soft illumination which means avoiding fluorescent lights in classrooms.
3/04/2008 - Our Learning Styles prevent violence in schools
An education expert believes short bursts of exercise between lessons can
help boys concentrate in school.
Michael Irwin from Massey University says school is becoming more and more
about sitting down, being quiet, doing work and listening. Research has
discovered that if those periods of learning are broken up with short bursts
of physical activity, children, particularly boys, will focus on their
studies for longer.
6/03/2008 - Learning Styles can prevent violence in schools
Primary school principals are shocked at survey results which show that 20% children was a danger to others. Their behaviour is affecting the learning of all children in the classroom and impacting the general health and confidence of teachers.
Research in Learning Styles from around the world and case studies from Learning Styles schools suggest that educators can alter and prevent this negative pattern of violent behaviour by understanding style differences and teaching with matched instructions.
20/02/2008 - What is your Golf Style?
The process of improving your game follows the same rules as everything else: the learning environmnet plays a role, your thinking style matters, your senses get involved. But did you know that while you may be a visual learner when it comes to mathematics, you may be a kinesthetic learner in golf? So don't rely on your LSA or TSA results: find out how best to practice your golf by completing your Golf Style Analysis http://www.creativelearningcentre.com/products/.
20/02/2008 - STANDARDS FOR MULTICULTURAL ASSESSMENT
The increasing diversity in student backgrounds presents special challenges for teachers, particularly when it comes to creating fair test questions. The standards assembled in the following link address many of these challenges, and although geared primarily towards recruitment screening, work well for the classroom: http://www.theaaceonline.com/multicultural.pdf.
31/01/2008 - Quality Teachers Needed
A recent Auckland (New Zealand) survey indicates that 70% of schools struggle to find experienced teachers. Most applicants tend to be beginning teachers or from overseas. Staff retention is also an issue in many schools. We at Creative Learning believe we have a solution: our Teaching Style Analysis (TSA).
23/01/2008 - A new discipline regime in New Zealand top schools
Even the brightest students could be held back a year at school if their attitude at school is found wanting, if they fail to do homework, or if they regularly fail to get to school on time.
The regime was a success at Shirley Boys' High in
Christchurch, and will now be implemented at Westlake Boys High in Auckland.
The main goal of the new scheme is to emphasize the importance of attitude and effort at school.
7/01/2008 - 2008 - the year of low stress
Yoga induces a feeling of well-being in healthy people, and can reverse the clinical and biochemical changes associated with metabolic syndrome, according to results of studies from Sweden and India. (Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of heart disease risk factors such as high blood pressure, obesity and high blood sugar.) 20/12/2007 - Adult literacy in New Zealand
How literate are New Zealand adults? How does the literacy of New Zealand adults change according to their income? How does their literacy compare with that of adults from other countries?
The Adult Literacy and Life Skills (ALL) Survey aims to answer these and other similar questions.
Newstalk ZB: With news of New Zealand wages falling 30-60% below Australia's, many employers are striving to close the gap, not only financially, but also in terms of productivity.
