Frequently Asked Questions about Learning Styles:
- 1. What is a person's Learning Style?
It is the way in which a human being of any age concentrates on, absorbs, processes and retains new and difficult information. Everyone has a unique style in which they prefer to learn and if a student's learning preferences are being matched with the overall learning conditions and their study environment, they become their strengths. This will improve academic performance and lead to permanent learning success.
- 2. Does everybody have a Learning Style?
Yes, and everybody's learning style is uniquely different; there are no 'good' or 'bad' styles, only mismatched learning styles which over time usually lead to frustration and often to learning problems.
- 3. If all students in my class have a different learning style, how can I teach them?
To accommodate students' learning styles, teachers need to apply new management techniques for the classroom which they can learn in our Diploma in Holistic Education. On completion of this course, they will have acquired what we call a 'new mastery in teaching'. Once a teacher knows his or her students' learning styles, it is possible to re-arrange learning tasks according to individual LSA Profiles and/or the group profile of the class. Our LSA Interpretation Manual and our Learning Style courses give educators the necessary insights and techniques to cater for style diversity in their classroom.
- 4. Do Learning Styles change over time?
Yes, particularly among primary (elementary) school pupils because the majority of learning style elements is biologically based and as children grow up, their learning styles change. Beyond teenage years however, biological learning style preferences are fairly set and remain pretty stable over a life time, but the learned/conditioned elements of someone's LSA Profile can be influenced at will and can literally change overnight.
- 5. Isn't V-A-K (Visual-Auditory-Kinesthetic) what we call Learning Styles?
Yes, but only partially because V-A-K does not include Tactile (T) - hands-on learning, and what's more important, a person's learning style consist of many more elements than sensory modalities only. V-A-T-K is what can be called a subgroup of learning style elements, a 'layer' in our LSA and WSA models, called 'Sensory Modalities'. They describe how a person prefers to take in new and difficult information: either by seeing/reading/imagining (V), listening/talking (A), touching/hands-on learning (T) or doing/participating/feeling and physical involvement (K).
- 6. How can parents help their children improve their learning/homework etc?
By having their Learning Style assessed ( LSA-Junior for primary/elementary school children and LSA-Senior for high school students), by allowing them to set up a learning environment at home which is conducive to their style preferences, by talking to the teacher(s), sharing the results of the LSA and asking if it is possible to accommodate their child's learning needs in class. Currently many teachers are being educated by parents about style diversity in learning and once they understand about students' true learning needs, they are usually quite interested and willing to apply new teaching methods in class. - 7. Is the LSA an intelligence test?
No, it is not. It is a self-assessment which gives insight into a student's unique combination of style elements regarding the physical space where they prefer to study and concentrate, their time-of-day preferences for learning, their social and environmental needs during the learning process as well as their frame of mind and their attitudes towards school and learning.
- 8. How do I find out about my children's/students' Learning Styles?

- 9. My son is ADD/dyslexic or both - what can I do?
Read Articles about Learning Styles, have his learning style assessed with our LSA instrument, and for dyslexia you can find many links to dyslexia-related sights in our 'Links' section.
- 10. Is Learning Style the same as Teaching Style?
Not really, but many teachers prefer to use the same techniques for their teaching as they tend to use for their own learning, their own information intake. That's why teachers who are highly auditory and visual (meaning they learn best through listening, discussing and reading) will use a lot of lecturing, discussions and reading materials in their teaching. However, once a teacher becomes aware of his or her own Learning Style they can deliberately use a Teaching Style which accommodates the diverse learning needs of their students.
- 11. Do teachers have a Learning Style?
Yes, like every other human being, and often they believe the way they learned themselves successfully in school is the best way to teach in class because if they had good results, their students should have the same positive outcome. However, research has shown that the learning style of teachers often does not match the learning styles of their students which leads to Underachievement in students, and stress and frustration in the teacher. - 12. Can we have your Learning Styles course as professional development day for staff at our school?

- 13. What reading materials do you have for Learning Styles?
You can read Barbara Prashnig's book 'The Power of Diversity' as well as our collection of Articles on Learning Styles.
- 14. Do I have to do all of the Modules to receive the Diploma in Holistic Education?
- Yes, but they can be spread over a period of time which you can choose.
- 15. Can I use/buy the LSA software without training?
Yes, you can, but we recommend you participate in our programme Introduction to Learning Styles because the training will give you a much deeper insight into our assessment instruments, their use with individual students and whole groups, combined with practical applications in the classroom. People who have successfully completed our courses, are also entitled to purchase our Personal Assessment Software at Certified User Prices.
- 16. Is the Creative Learning Co a computer training company?
No, it is not, but the Diversity Concept and Learning Styles can be used to make computer training more successful for students and less stressful for instructors/tutors.
